I am old school but I will give it a shot. Do you want to do digital or film? Are you looking to set up a at home digital studio have it mobile? Are you a beginning photographer or have you taken a few courses? I just did some research on digial and the Fuji S2 digital pro camera is the best for color and for the price. I am still shooting in film using F-100, so dont have any real hands on experience, but the Fuji combined with the excellent glass of Nikon lense is what I have been hearing from others. It runs about $1900 and takes Nikon lenses. If you can't afford that, and if you are just a novice, go and get a low cost Nikon pro film camera like the N65 or something for about $250. The lenses you buy will work on digital down the road if you switch over. I remember my first photo class was helpful, but a lot of chemical b&W darkroom stuff, which nobody does anymore. So check the content of the class, you might now need it. You could sign up for some classes here and get far more out of it then going to community college of something in a much shorted time frame. Also, see if you local camera store has some DVD's on digital portrait...anything by author Will Crocket is awesome! Also, get two books; 1) Professional Secrets of Natural Light Portrait Photography by Douglas Allen Box...as this will help you understand light and how to use it. 2) the Zone, ... this will help give you a technical way to look at the photo you want to get and how to measure light...go to Amherst Media website to find these. Hope this helps,
Phil

I am even older school than Phil. Pentax is another company that makes extremely good optics. Their newest *ist
camera can take even older manual focus lenses, as do some of the Nikons.

If money is an issue here, you can start with a used Nikon manual focus FM, FM2 or FM2A, or Pentax MX, K-1000 or K2 and a 50mm lens for much of what you want to do. Later, you might want a short telephoto for portraits and some scenics. Nikon and Pentax both make excellent 85's. If you decide to go manual focus, keh.com has reasonable buys, and is a reputable, honest dealer in used equipment.
