Canon10D vs 1D Sports Shots with Flash

Currently I'm using a canon T90, FD lens & a manual 1/250 sec. speed with flash. I am using this set up for a small county newspaper& helping kids with their high school yearbook covering HS Sports @ the same time. So I am working with a very tight budget. I'm trying to cut down on cost of developing out of focused shots is primary reason to go digital, second is meeting deadlines. Here is a 2 part question. 1)I am more interested in camera speed with flash then number of burst per second. With a 10D using a Canon 550ex flash is there anyway to bump speed up to 1/250 sec. while keeping auto features & focus on. 2)If this is not possible can some one recommend a site that sells used Canon 1D or demos. besides ebay This is a great site and Thanks,
Roger R.

Give this move a lot of research and thought. Digital and autofocus mean introducing TWO new issues to deal with.

Don't count on autofocus ALWAYS to focus accurately. If you're as old as I am, however (56), AF may give you a higher percentage of sharp action shots. As we get older, it's harder to focus.

Chat groups are talking about problems with both the D10 and the new Rebel digital SLR's. I'd wait a while on Canon, unless you want to shell out for the 1DS. 8 grand seems a bit inconsistent with a tight budget.

There'a a pro who hangs around here who uses Canon and can advise you on speeding up the flash process.

Your T90 is getting old, and the shutter could fail. At least keep a TX ($50 on auctions) around as a backup.
Also, as someone said recently in Shutterbug, photogs are underestimating the Photoshop work that needs to be done to digital shots. They have to be sized for their intended use, contrast and color tweaked, cropped, and sometimes retouched. Plus you'd have to learning curve of Photoshop or Elements to deal with.

For your cost I would recommend the 10D and 550EX. You can overcome the 200/sec limitation on shooting with stobe by setting the 550 to use FP (focal Plane) or high speed flash. The flash fires at a very high frequency and thus lights the scene even though the shutter is opening and closing to quickly for the flash to fire conventionally.

I would recommend a 1D if you can swing it used. It is a far superior camera in every facet but one to the 1D, resolution. The AF is superior, Focus, X-Sync and a ton of other areas. It is a "professional" body as opposed to the 10D which is a "prosumer" and is more limited and not as well built. They should be flooding the market in the next 6 or 8 months (July '04) due to the release of the 1Dmk2 body and most pros switching to the newer bodies.

Good luck!
Gil

If cost is the main problem you can just get process only and then pick which negatives you want prints made of, instead of getting prints of the whole roll.
Or take advantage of a store policy that many places have of just not paying for the ones you don't want.
