I'll suggest you to get as close as possible!...With zoom or not!...Now: "Will it be day light?"..."Or night?"...

At night there is no way you will take sharp pics with a zoom, your film has to be 800 ISO or higher!...And still need to get close to your subject.

Why?...Because there's not enough light for you to take the pic, even with those huge lights at any stadium!...

At daylight it might or will work!...

Another thing is if you want to get a faster lens, one that is fast enough to take pics at night an able to open and close the lens diaphragm fast enough!...You need some type of lens able to set an aperture like at at 2.0 (zooms like those are expensive tough!...)

And last but not least, the more range you have on a zoom lens (28-300, 100-400, etc) the less sharp it is!...Unless you really want to buy a really nice zoom lens like the ones that pros use, somewhere around $ 1'000.00 USD.

Don't buy cheap brands like Vivitar, Phoenix, etc!...

I hope this helps.

Unfortunately Mark, for close-ups from 400 feet, you're going to need a telescope!! Professional wildlife photographers get close ups of animals with $7000, 600mm lenses at about 40-50 feet!

What about a teleconverter? You might possibly be able to save yourself some money by getting a 1.4x or a 2.0x teleconverter to double (or multiply by 1.4) the focal length of your lens. Just a thought!
