international library of photography

I submitted a photgraph to them and they decided to publish it and like i've seen on this site before other said ... I ordered a copy of the book ut as far as I know it hasn't been released yet (was suppose to be this spring) now they sent me a letter inviting me to this 3 day reception/convention in washington dc. the letter stated that they are giving me an award (not money) as well as a possible money awards of which I dont' know and which will be anounced there... but the catch is they are askign for about 600 dollars just for the convention... for one person... the whole trip for one would probably be about 1000 dollars and me being a college student I can't just throw money like that for something.... do u think this is a worthwhile oportunity or is it all a bunch on bologney which I should ignore and just save soem money?

I've never dealt with them, but my impression is they're simply a vanity press. Virtually any picture you submit will be deemed a "semi-finalist" and if you buy the book they'll publish it.

I agree with Jon. As far as I am concerned it is just a major scam to get photographers money. I had never heard of the convention situation before...but it looks to me like another way to get money from you. My advice...don't do it. If someone really wanted to honor you...they would pay for you to come to them!!

I submitted a question about this very event just yesterday. I did verify one thing that Damian had stated in the other thread.....our pictures do not go into a book UNLESS you buy it or the plaque. Mine was supposed to be in a publication called "Forever in a Moment". I didn't buy the book, but I did purchase the plaque. This was a few months after returning my proof. I checked on my picture yesterday, and now I'm being published in a book called "Wandering Spirits." All my original paperwork stated that my picture would be in "Forever...." My assumption is that had I sent in a check when I got the first letter, my pic would have been included in "Forever".

I doubt it would do any good to complain to anyone, because all they have to do at the site is claim that someone "goofed" and didn't get the picture in the layout. Then they would promise to put it in the next published edition. After giving their website a thorough looking over, I suspect they sell these pics we submit to people who need pics for their various publications. Whether we get any commission from these sales or not remains to be seen.

This is what I submitted to this site yesterday:

"Has anyone received the latest letter from ILP informing you that "you have been selected by an international panel of top professional photographers to receive....THE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN AMATEUR PHOTOFRAPHY AWARD for 2003"?
I received this letter yesterday, and it made me very suspicious because it looks exactly like a form letter. Further reading shows that EVERYONE who attends this symposium gets this award along with a silver award bowl (valued at $200). This looks very legit to me. This convention is being held in Washington, DC, and they are having live entertainment, dances, the whole ball of wax. Of course the registration fee is ONLY $595 *choke*.

Like everyone else, I was elated when I first received the letter. The more I thought about it, however, it just seemed like one of those "too good to be true" letters. By the way, I didn't order the book my pic is supposedly in, but I did opt to get a plaque. I agree with everyone else that it is a shame the company plays so on our emotions."
