slide scanner sharpness

I broke down and bought a Minolta scan dual III slide scanner in the hopes of producing at least 8x10 prints from 35mm slides. The results have been a letdown in the sharpness department- it seems like the scanner never quite focuses right, whether I use the autofocus feature or the manual override. It appears this way on screen and in the prints. I'd kind of given up...
Then, I bought a medium format camera and took some slides to a professional outfit to have them scanned and printed at 16x20. The owner, who I've given a lot of business, complained of the same problem, and showed me some test prints from my slides- blurry edges. I swear my 5mp digital camera can do MUCH better.
I don't know what sort of equipment he's using.
Help, someone. What are we doing wrong?

That scanner should give you crisp 8 x 10's from 35-mm. Even the first time you see the image in Photoshop (Elements, whatever you're using), it should be reasonably sharp. Remember that Digital Ice and other forms of automatic dust spotting do affect sharpness. Try a scan with Digital Ice off. Also, be sure you are scanning at the full resolution your scanner can do. My Nikon will default to a half-resolution setting if I don't catch it in the act.
Are you scanning Kodachrome? Even so, the basic scan without Digital Ice should look OK.
Try this, too. After you work the image [get the contrast, brightness, any cropping, dust spotting (remember Digital Ice is off)] go to Filter/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask and try the settings 150, 1.5 and 3. Do you see a dramatic difference? Does it print a crisp 8 x 10?
If none of these options work for you, it may well be the focus function of your scanner. If your friend is using a Nikon, these are known to experience occasional autofocus hiccups. As a last resort, call the scanner maker's support.
