Photography Question

how to add color to b&w photo

I am quite ignorant when it comes to using my photo editing software, but I was hoping someone could tell me how to add color to a b&w photo. For example, if you are wanting a b&w photo of a little girl, but maybe you want her hair bow to have color. How do you do this. I keep seeing "layers" listed, but I don't know how to do any of this. I have paintshop pro and photoshop. Any help is appreciated!

Are you shooting film or digital? The easiest way is to shoot the original in color. Then you convert it to b&w in Photoshop using an adjustment layer. On that adjustment layer add a layer mask if it doesn't already have one. Now with a paintbrush of the appropriate size paint in black on the layer mask where you want to restore the color. There you have it.

As an aside, it's really fun and easy to handcolor b&w photos using Thompson photo oil paint.
