How to shot band photos with pop up flash.

Hi, I recently bought a second hand Canon eos 30/Elan on e-bay. I've been trying to take photos of local bands but I have a problem with the pop up flash; when using it in low light conditions it emits a strobe like flash when focusing which I and the bands find very distressing.I assume it has to do with the red eye reduction feature and I have tried to turn it off using the custom funtions but to no avail. I have also tried consulting the instruction booklet but unfortunatly this is in french and not very helpful.Have I bought a lemon? or is there something very simple that I'm overlooking? I would consider buying a better flash, but as they can be very expensive can anyone suggest a good, mid-priced one for this camera? Thanks for your help.

  The red-eye reduction is the white light between the right grip and the lens mount. The strobing pop-up flash is the low-light autofocus assist. It can be disabled with custom function 7:
0 = af assist enabled/flash fires
1 = af assist disabled/flash fires
2 = af assist enabled/flash disabled

A key to EOS camera custom functions, in English ;), can be found at:

  hey Vic,
I have taken tons of band photos. a tiny pop up flash will not work very well. all that I really need is just good light on every member. if there is not a good light sorce, then you should try a light reflecting material; like a peice of white postar board paper. but also, I think that too much light can be kind of boring. I like to use the least amount of light as possible. it gives the photos an eery type of feeling and it can be possible to give them a sort of "deeper" look.maybe I could give you better advive if I knew if the photos were live or portraits, and the location that they are tAKEN IN.

  If you have the red-eye reduction function enable, the flash will emits some pre flashes to reduce red eye.
The pop up flash is better to use in groups of people.
For a better effect on shooting bands I would strongly recommend you not to use flash. Instead, try to push film, let's say from ISO 400 to ISO 1600. If you do that, your camera will assume you have an ISO 1600 and you probably won't need any flash. Not only this allows you to freeze the action but also to capture on film the dramatic and interesting effects of those colorful spot lights that bands are lit in concerts.
I hope this helps you.
