Photographing the Grand Canyon

Hi,

I used a nikon n80 with a 50mm f/1.4 d with a nc filter. It was bright day and I was shooting at around 7am with kodak iso 100 negative. But most of the pictures of the canyon turned up foggy, whereas all the pictures capturing people turned up with the usual sharpness. I am attaching the photo. Is there any way to avoid this ?

thanks
pradeep

You say the people turned up sharp, but the canyon turned up foggy. Could it be a result of the "Aerial Perspective" phenomenon. I had always noticed that things at great distances always seemed a bit foggy, but I never knew why. I am a film student and this summer I had a Course called Visual Communications and in it we learned about a particular natural phenomenon which may explain this. It is called "Aerial Perspective" and it basically refers to the effect that the particles in the atmosphere have on light. Check out this link for a more detailed explanation. http://psych.hanover.edu/Krantz/art/aerial.html
Hope this helps
