digital camera with slave flash

I have a Sony dsc-f717 (digital camera.) I am unable to get slave flash units to work properly.

Sync problem?

Thanks for any help.

The built-in flash on the camera is probably lighting and setting off the slave units before the shutter opens. It does this because (1) red-eye reduction flickers the flash before it fires to get people's pupils to close. This function can be turned off,
(2) the camera uses a pre-flash to set the TTL flash exposure (flash fires twice). I don't think this can be defeated.

Thank you for your response. I had already turned off the red-eye. The problem is the TTL metering. I was able to solve this problem this by using an external flash (non-sony)to trigger the slaves.

Thank you again, I should have consulted this forum two weeks ago and saved myself much frustration.
