Photography Question

Horizontal lightening of photo

I just had a roll of film developed today and when I looked at the photos there were probably 8-10 of them totally unusable due to a lightened area of the photo about 2/3 of the way down and all the way across the photo. It looks as though, for lack of a better way to describe it, someone took a sheet of paper and put it over part of the photo and left it outside where the sun faded the uncovered portion. I asked about it, the photo person said it was on the negatives so therefore not a processing problem. There are brand new batteries in my Canon Rebel 2000 and I found it odd that not all the photos had this problem. Any clues?
