Photography Question

Lindsay M.

First Camera!

I am toying with the idea of taking some classes...I think starting a photography business in my town would be a smart thing to do, as well as being able to be creative in my line of work. Anyway...my question is...I think I want to start off by buying an SLR (film). What do you recommend for an aspiring professional, but on a limited budget?? I want to be able to accessorise it later!

If you want to be able to grow with it then I suggest sticking with either Canon or Nikon. They have the most complete lines. That's why most pros use one or the other. Without knowing your budget it's tough to be more specific.

It's a very limited budget...I'm thinking around $150.00 (plus or minus, prices are different everywhere...I'd pretty just like to know the models you think I could grow with, be able to afford now, but use later once I progress). I've looked into the Canon Rebel, I haven't looked at any Nikons. What do you think about those Olympuses, I don't know which model they are, but they're very streamlined and silver.

All the major brands make fine cameras. If you intend to turn pro and want a system that will grow with you then I will reiterate that you should probably stick with Canon or Nikon. The reality is it doesn't really matter what camera body you start with because as you upgrade you will invariably replace whatever camera you buy now with a newer better one.

With that in mind I would look for a camera that allows you to shoot in manual mode so that you can learn what you're doing. And one that feels good in your hand. Go to the camera store and hold some.
