Photography Question

Colin

fast lens

I have recently upgraded my canon 300 for a canon d60 with which i'm using my old tamron 28 - 300mm f3.5 -6.3 lens.
I am very keen on taking action shots of school basketball during the day in an indoor stadium and my question is that if I bought a sigma 70 - 200 f2.8 ex apo hsm zoom lens could it do the job without a flash?
many thanks,
colin.

Maybe. f/2.8 is 2 stops faster than f/5.6, so if you're getting a shutter speed of 1/30 at f/5.6 with the 28-300 zoom, you would be able to get 1/125 at f/2.8 with the f/2.8 zoom.

As a photographer of the Uniball trophy basketball here in the UK, I use either the tamron 80-200 F2.8 lens, or the 180mm f2.5. Most stadium lighting will allow a decent high shutter speed.
Obviusoly you wont have this option as you're using digital...However, if you where, as you probably know, factor in which film stock you plan to use as a priority. I would advise not to use colour transparency film. Colour print film has a greater latitude and can tolerate artificial light more easily. I have used a mixture of film stocks. One of which my favourite has been Fuji superG 800 speed.
