Letters on back of prints

Please give me a run down on the letters on the back of machine prints. I know they respond to the colours and density, but which letter is for which colour etc. Also why do they decrease the density all the time, when trying to expose for a silhouette the lab tech lightens the print - washing it out and making it appear grainy. I am always taking my prints back to be redone. Why do they not just print on automatic?, are they undoing my careful metering at the lab?.

The lab tries to correct the exposure for what they deem to be appropriate. They don't know that you shot the pictures with low light for a reason. When you take the film to the lab give them explicit instruction to print as is with no correction. Then you will get the prints back the way you shot them.
