Problems with the lens hood

I'm shooting with Minolta Dynax 7. I'm having problems with symmetrical shadowing at the corners of the slide film. I guess it's due to the lens hood. Could anyone please comment on this problem. Is it more of a problem if I tilt the camera upward at an angle? If I have put the lens hood correctly (ie,aliging the red marks on the lens barrel with that on the hood itself)should it still occur?

If the lens hood opening is smaller than the angle of view of your lens, the corners will be shaded by the hood, causing the shadows you mentioned. You may have the hood on top of your filter which could cause this effect by extending it too far in front of the lens. Check with Minolta to be sure you have the correct hood for the focal length of your lens. A wide angle lens, for instance, requires a shorter hood, or no hood at all.

Thanks very much, wayne. I was using the hood on top of the polarizing filter. My lens is 24-105 D type zoom lens (Minolta) and the hood came with the lens itself. How would it matter if I don't use the hood at all. I know the concern about the stray light falling on to the lens but I always use the camera in manual mode. Please comment.

With your zoom at about 35 mm to 105 mm you should not have a problem with the hood. It is only at short focal lengths that the angle of view is so great that the edges of the hood are visible through the lens. If the hood came with the lens it should work at all focal lengths without the added filter. If it is possible, put the filter on in front of the hood. If it is not possible, simply remove the hood when shooting with the short focal lengths. The hood will cut down stray light but if you are careful to shoot with the light source behind you it should not be an issue. You should check with your Minolta dealer about the filter. It actually protrudes in front of the lens and may interfere at 24 mm even without the hood. You may have to purchase a step up ring and a larger diameter filter. If I can be of any more help, please let me know. I will do what I can.

One thing I forgot to mention. Have you ever seen a photograph taken with a fisheye lens? Well, you cannot use a lens hood on a fisheye and the pictures turn out fine. The lens hood is good insurance, though.
