New categories

Still not happy with BP the way it is now with the new contest categories. I am sitting of loads of bird photos with nowhere to put them. I guess they could go into catch all but that category is huge. When birds comes around again my photos will be old. I know the decision has been made and some good people have left because of it, but I will still voice my displeasure. At least it has made me look elsewhere. I am looking into joining the local photography club where I can post anything I like. Freedom, what a lovely word.

I'm with you, Ann. I've only entered two so far this month. I haven't entered every day for a while, but this is a new low for me. My enthusiasm is gone.

Backyard Birds in Animals for October, Ann :) Get 'em in :)

And you might be able to shoot some for Fall Colors (I can see an entry that's more about the foliage but that has a bird in it, too) or even for Texture (Elements of Design) maybe if you get a close-up like of just a wing or something - as well as the good ole' Catch-All.
Good luck.

I suspect there will always be up to a 24 hour delay before we see the new categories everywhere on the first of the month, but it's really nice to have them SOMEWHERE in advance, so thanks to Jim and team for responding to that suggestion.

(I would not have seen them, either, except for mention in a group; presumably the "location", logical though kind of buried, will remain the same each month and we will get used to looking there as it gets close to the end of the month).

I appreciate the response, as on this end, you still cannot view the categories unless I asked in the thread. Thank you.

Yes, great this month for backyard birds but still very restrictive. If I take it literally I am guessing only ones taken in your backyard or perhaps the local birds in your area?

And re fall colours, it's spring over here so no luck there. However, I could go through the archives and resubmit I guess.

Also in the flowers category I see a lot already have badges under them. Is that because they are resubmits? If so, then doesn't that defeat the purpose of the contest, in that I thought BP wanted new material. I can't blame people for resubmitting old images with the way the categories are now and good on them, however, it's sad that we have to go through the archives to find something that fits a category.

Just my thoughts, but
1) I would not take any of the categories too literally. Judges here have never paid any attention to where you were from when awarding badges, and I can't imagine their having the time or interest to check where you were at the time you took the picture to ascertain that you were not in your own backyard. I do think we are likely to see smaller and more common birds and songbirds among the Finalists and Winners than hawks, eagles, osprey and other birds of prey. And I would also expect to see quite a few feeders, birdbaths, bird houses, etc., not because that's a requisite but rather because the subcategory suggests that those will be able to compete equally with bird photos in which "no hand of man" is visible. Ironically, this is a category in which I will pretty much be forced to my archives as the birds in our area have pretty much flown south for the winter :)
2) We get fall here in the Midwest, but few of the brilliant reds and oranges that are traditionally associated with that season; true autumn colors here are yellows and golds. And those in Florida and Southern California, for example, always complain that they have NO fall to speak of, no matter what the month is. You can use the hue changer to simulate fall colors, really quite effectively - you might prefer to get the colors naturally, but I think for most photographers any more, post processing is an important part of the process.
3) Yes, I'd say the badges you see are on re-submissions. I have always put a few of those in every month - maybe 5-6 out of 30 submissions - and I have not increased that number. I have also always entered a very generous number of older images, images from my "archives" so to speak. Friends laugh because I have a BP Folder on my hard drive; and whenever I process an image that I like at all, I put it in that folder. Then I draw from that heavily during the month, interspersing older images with whatever I happen to be shooting currently. I'm one who likes to try to enter all 10 categories every month, preferably with 3 images in each; and if I have several similar images (as happens when I do a "shoot"), I prefer to enter each of them in a different month so I'm not competing with myself, so to speak. I don't know what to say to people who have always only put newly taken images in the contest - I can certainly see why the new direction the contest has taken would not work well with that approach, especially if one didn't want to shoot for the themes.

Anyway, I doubt any of these thoughts are helpful, but maybe they will give you an idea or two, Ann . . . or maybe someone else will find them helpful.

Thanks for that Nikki, I didn't expect such a huge response. I am excited that I can participate this month but I do miss that feeling when you have been out somewhere and you feel you have got this amazing shot and you can't enter it. I am a person who likes to enter current shots, not trawl back through the archives but maybe that's what I will have to do. This new way has taken the shine off BP for me. I used to find myself telling people about the site and what a great site it was but now I don't. I will still participate when there is a category I can upload to but they seem to be few and far between these days. I love what I love, birds and don't find myself trying for the other categories just because that is what they are this month. Thanks for your thoughts.

You're welcome, Ann. I understand where you are coming from, I really do.
But I also think you will have some great results if you try to take the topics, whatever they are, and try to let them inform at least some of your photography sessions each month. So this month, when "Intentional Blur" is the Technique category, maybe try for some bird captures at a slower shutter speed than normal and see what you get. Or maybe set up a self portrait, using a tripod, of you taking your bird photos. And I've already suggested a few others.
But, of course, keep taking the same great bird photos you always have and do. Just see what happens when you let a few of these mandatory categories "inform" your shooting occasionally.

I appreciate your positive attitude toward the way BP is restricting the categories, Nikki, I really do! I wish I could be the same. But I'm going to express my monthly protest to the contest categories, though most of you have moved on, I think. At least there is a seasonal category and a flower category, so that is an improvement. And famous destinations is pretty broad. But I still don't like the way things are done now, the categories are too restricted. Once again I'll say that my enthusiasm for BP has diminished greatly.

Although I am retired , between a part time job and community involvement, I have little time to go chasing subjects for restrictive monthly categories. I will resubmit some old ones and continue to shoot what interests me. I donít expect to enter many this month. Like some others I find these categories too restrictive and may enter 3 or 4 at the most.

Yes, Ann, I am with you and Lindley on the same boat. The change has kind of taken the wind of my sails too! I am still participating in the monthly contest but hitting new lows ( no. of photos entered into the contest) in each passing month.
