Look at Really Right Stuff, they make great tripod and head equipment. I have had there stuff for years and it really holds up well. It is a bit pricy but its also top notch quality and as I said it hold up great !

Hi Tammy, If you want really light tripod, look at carbon fiber tripods. Ball heads can be bought separately or as a part of a kit. Gitzo, Manfrotto, Vanguard are some of good brands you should check out - lots of choices. For example, Vanguard VEO 2 265CB Carbon Fiber Tripod with VEO 2 BH-50 Ball Head.

Slik is another brand that makes carbon fiber. Also known for good tripods I believe Really Right Stuff is the one that makes a tripod head that lets you attach the camera to a tripod so that the pivot is at the nodal point so that you can stitch photos together much better to make panos. So since you go hiking, you want to get that kind of head if there isn't a tripod from Really Right Stuff that comes with it. If carbon fiber is too high in price you can save some weight by getting something shorter but still useful. Adorama or B&H will have the weight listed for anything that's on their website.

PS -- the Really Right Stuff Ball Heads are great too -- I have one on my Induro tripod. The ball head probably weighs as much or more than the tripod, however! ;) I don't mind -- that ball head is amazing, and solid as a rock. BH-55 PCLR is the larger ball head I use, with a panning base. There are many accessories that can then go with it -- the bit Gregory talks about is actually a whole rig that works in conjunction with their ball head and panning base, to help create no-parallax stitch-pano's... quite an expensive bit of kit, if you buy it all in one go. (The ball head alone with the panning base is around $600 and weighs in at 2.3lbs, before adding any of the dedicated pano accessories. But it will last you forever, most likely, and locks into position solid as can be.)
