Interested to see if Jan. receives more attention before early Feb. The pattern for the last few months has been about a day of two of the active month (e.g. Jan during Jan) and then nothing until the next month (e.g. Jan during Feb).

Joannie, What probably happened is that you may have also entered it into the Jan, contest and when it got a late Dec EP it registered with the latest entry date. If it was a resub and had achieved a Staff Fav or Finalist badge before, it doesn't send out a notification of it's later status. I've had that happen so now I know. Some of my finalists I have to find in the posting not by email,

Thought you might be interested in knowing... The daily average amount of contest entries this month is somewhere between 140 a day and 147 a day. I'm not up at 3:00 am to grab the total for the full day at the end of the day. That projects to a monthly total of between 3,920 and 4,141 for Feb.

According to reports, eps have been selected on the following days: Jan 7, Jan 30, Feb 14, and Feb 17. The judging cycle is two months (No eps can be selected for the month in question on the 1st day. Entries must wait one full day before ep action can occur. So eps are eligible for selection from the second day of the month on except those entered that day For example, today the 19th a judge could ep a photo entered anywhere between the 1st and 18th, but the ones entered today must wait a full day [tomorrow] before they could be selected.) I do think probably a minimum of 3 days total is all that it takes to get through the judging at rapid speed. We all hope that the judges take longer than rapid speed.

Has Jim ever addressed the frustration of many here that EP's (and lately Staff Favorites, Finalists, and Winners) are mostly decided in just a few days at the end of the month? It certainly suggests that he cares less about the contest than in the past. And that also weighs on the issue of whether every entry is fairly considered.

Wally a few days ago a few of us expressed or concerns about the the future of the site and our displeasure with it. Our comments where removed ( as I image these will be) and eventually the whole thread was taken down. I believe that was our answer!!

Wally, John, et al, What you say is one way of looking at things. It is possible, he cares less about the contest etc. But is it not possible that something else could be the reason. This site costs something to keep going. Maybe just maybe, Jim needs to find more revenue to do that. Could Jim have to spend more time creating revenue streams to get that revenue? Could that effort take time away from judging? I have no knowledge of the inside story here, but if what I say is true would we say that he cares less? I think we might conclude he cares a lot to do that work which out of necessity would require time to do and judging time might be where that time comes from? It's just thought but it's something to consider.

I agree that it's difficult to know exactly why things happen as they do - only Jim would be able to tell us, and he usually doesn't respond. But the removal of the thread that John referred to is an answer of sorts (and not a good one in my opinion).

WOW. I just discovered it was MY thread---asking whether others had troubles uploading a contest photo (that day)---that had been deleted! Maybe others reading the thread later would see that some comments had been deleted, so it was "decided" to delete the whole thread(?) The comments I was able to read before they got deleted were not inflammatory or offensive; I don't know about the others.

My two cents worth - a lot of supposition and guesswork with no verifiable evidence or facts. We all may be a little frustrated by a thread disappearing and how long it's taking for contest results to be posted, but let's all take a step back, take deep breath and calm down. Did any of us think to ask "How can we help?"? I sure didn't!!

Just another perspective... " Back in the day" in a 72 hour period there were about the same number of entries as there are in a 30 day month now. So if all of the months EPs are selected in a 72 hour window now, that is a viewing/decision period identical to "back in the day". I say, "don't worry about it and grab your camera".

Very true, Errick! The important thing is the shoot and the final image. I remember "back in the day"---before I took a 7 yr hiatus---that there were a TON of entries every month (before the SFs were added). But it seemed like there was much more time between the awarding of the Finalists and the Gold round judging. Anyway, as the Serenity prayer states, we only have control over what we actually have control over (taking photos and entering them), and the rest we should just learn to accept---as something we have no control over. ("Only The Shadow knows"....why things are taking longer these days) ;-)

I agree that there are no known "facts" regarding why the contest progress is condensed into a few days. I also agree that there are a variety of explanations. But we can only guess because BetterPhoto has chosen not to provide any information. I understand that this site is Jim's and he can do what he wants. But that does not mean that his customers can not ask acceptable questions. As a BP oldtimer, I also know that the contest has far fewer entries than in the past (why?). But, it also has far fewer judges (instructors) who must evaluate a few thousand entries in as little as 2 days recently as well as doing many other things to maintain the site. None of this is meant to disparage Jim's yeoman work here. But some feedback would be nice. Finally, we all could indeed just ignore the contest issues and just go photograph. But then why enter the contest at all?

I have not been a member as long as some folks but I have noticed a drop in submissions. I don't submit as many as I used to. Why this is, I am not sure. For me, the hasty judging is a bit of a letdown and it could be why I am submitting less, but then, I may just be getting old. Perish the thought!

I think we're too late in the month to avoid rushed. Eps appear to be up through the 10th as I write. We must get through the 31st for eps, then there are the unseen rounds which could be any number, followed by three more public rounds: Staff favorites, finalists, and winners. All this should be completed by midnight the 28th. I figure that's kinda the definition of rushed.

As far as being rushed, we have no idea how images are chosen. Maybe Jim keeps track of them as they are posted. Once he has a big bunch of them, he goes through and posts EPs? He has a lot going on running BP and as long as everything is done by the end of the month I am happy...It has always been a mystery to me how they choose winners etc. and how many helpers he has...
