Lens Hood

What does a lens hood do? I have one with my nikkor 70-300mm lens. Thanks,

  Hi Jeff,
A lens hood cuts down on glare caused by stray light coming in from the sides. I have also found that lens hoods are great for keeping water of your lens when shooting in the rain.

A lens hood will also help protect the front element of your lens. I'm constantly banging the end of my longer lenses on things as I carry the camera and the hood takes all the abuse.

Hold on to that hood. It makes you look as if you know what you're doing. It also increases the resale value of your lens. It's mainly about what JeffG says; it may save your shot from flare problems. Bob Shell has a good article at beststuff.com under Photography/Imaging on lens hoods.
