How to take those Professional looking photos

Im using a Canon A2E with a 1.4 70-210 canon lens and I just cant get the photos to turn out like the professionals do. The image just isnt as crisp as it should be. Unless I get really close up shots. I think some of my photos are pretty good but still their missing something. Im taking outdoor shots where most protrait photos are taken inside how much does this change the outcome ? Can I change my lens to something better for portraits ?

Thanks
Tina

If your images aren't crisp it could be that you need to use a tripod. Other than that, how do you meter? Are you shooting on Program or do you understand exposure? There's a lot that goes into making "professional" images. It's tough to really tell what you need to improve from what little you've told us.
