Photography Question

RoxAnne E. Franklin

Why would you shoot with flourescent lights on?

I am still just an amateur, however, I think I've come far enough in the past year to realize that there is no such thing as a "special Lens" for shooting under flourescent lights in an office.

I was asked to do a photo shott for the company I work for in the office. There was plenty of ambient light and I was going to turn the florescents off of course. I got ill and they asked another photographer to step in and take the shots. She had them keep the florescent lights on telling them that she was using a "special lens" that enabled her to do that. Now, I can see using a filter over the lens, but when they asked her if she was using a filter, she said no, it was a special lens. Ok, I think this prooves that there is one in every crowd, unless of course there is a lens out there like this. I highly doubt it though.
What do you think?
After hearing this, I am so grateful that I take my hobby seriously enough to go to websites like this and seek help and strive to be honest about how and what it is I do.

I think you can call any screw on type filter that made with glass a lens and the drop in type (like Lee and Cokin) filter. Whatever. I heard people called the UV filter the UV lens, the FLD as correction lens, and the +2/+4 etc. as close up lens. But never heard of a 'special lens' other than the FLB/D/W 'filter' that will correct the color cast of the florescent light. Educate me, anyone?

Oh by the way, the color casting is not the problem of the lens. It's the film.

  Hey Roxanne,
I'm an amateur photographer as well and I attempt to read everything possible about photography. I have yet to see any type of lens or device that can make shooting in flourescent lights. If it is out there, I would like to know as well, but like you, I think it is very unlikely but if someone else knows, please share.

  Roxanne,
I agree with Andy, she was probably referring to a filter. Perhaps when she purchased it, it was sold under the term "Lens" as Andy stated above. I have seen Auctions on Ebay for certian type "lenses" and I open the auction page and it is a filter! It confuses me too!
I would say this person didn't really know a thing about Photography , and was trying to impress everyone with her supposed knowledge of the subject. She may have really thought it was a lens because it was called that when she bought it, perhaps even off one of those same auctions on Ebay...LOL.. My suggestion would be to approach this person and ask her nicely what type lens that was and where she got it, as you want to get one too...two to one odds she will show you a filter...

  LOL Carrie,

I really like that idea!! I think I will politely ask her to see the "lens" and take it from there. I dont want to be nasty or arrogant, however, she told them that everything I said about the lights was bull and that I didnt have a clue. She doesnt even know me and I would think that all of us with a love of the lens should stick together and try to learn more and not be greedy. There's plenty of pictures to take out there, none of us should ever be "out of work" so to speak.
Thanks for you words of advice.

  Roxanne,
If this person did say what you had said about shooting with the flourescents on was bull, then that only PROVES she doesn't know ANYTHING about real photography! Have you seen the pics? It will be really funny if they all turn out with that greenish cast from the lights...hehehehe... Will serve her right! But I agree with you, there aren't enough photographer's in the world to capture every image, every moment, etc, so why be greedy? I would even go in and do the pics my way, even if it is after hours, with the flourescent lights off....That way, if and when her "Special Lens" didn't work, you will have your photo's to turn in! You will save the day AND make her look like an IDIOT in the process, as she obviously is...I, being the way I am, would probably even take in a book to show her where it says shooting under those lights will produce a greenish cast, but I suppose she would know better than the experts too huh? LOL "THEY don't know what THEY are talking about either" she would say...Hehehehehe...
You Go Girl!
