Slide projectors Hello--I'd appreciate anyone's advice on buying a slide projector. New ones are just too expensive. Been looking on eBay and have seen some good prices, but I don't have a clue which brands/models are good or bad. Would appreciate any info or recommendations. Thanks.

Piper, In the U.S., Kodak Carousel projectors are the "standard." Something to think about if you ever have to use a tray of slides for a show somewhere or as a portfolio. A used Ektagraphic II in good condition can be had for a decent price. Current ones are Ektagraphic III's. These were the industrial strength version of the consumer Carousel projectors and were made to withstand the beatings school and corporate AV departments could dish out to their equipment. Die cast and stamped metal parts throughout (and not light weight). Evaluate one carefully though as some have been thoroughly thrashed by the AV department that originally owned it. Outside the U.S., the "Euro" in-line slide tray created for Zeiss, Rollei and Leitz projectors is the standard. The Leitz [Leica] projectors are excellent. One of the current models is the P150. Basic projector aside, the basic secret to getting the most out of projected slides is the lens! Kodak's lenses leave a lot to be desired. I replaced the standard 4-inch f/2.8 Kodak Ektar lens on an Ektagraphic with an f/2.8 70-120mm Schneider Kreuznach Vario-Prolux. The difference was dramatic and the lens cost about $130 new (you won't find them used; owners won't sell them). For the Leitz projectors, the Leitz 90mm f/2.5 ColorPlan is a decent lens. Second most important is the screen. White matte screens show greatest detail level even though they are not the most reflective. Worst in detail level are glass bead screens even though they are highest in reflectivity. -- John
