How much Shutter-Speed?

I would be interested to know, how much
Shutter-Speed is really necessary to
freeze action-shots properly? How
big is the gap between 1/4000 and 1/8000? Are there any sample-pictures
on the net to compare?

Thank you
Andreas

It depends on the action. The action of a snail race could probably be frozen with a shutter speed of 1/15. People running may require 1/250 or 1/500. For my money the higher shutter speeds like the ones you mention are less about freezing action than they are about allowing me to open my aperture in brighter light.
