Photography Question

White Balance Selection

If I am taking an outdoor portrait and the sky is cloudy, but I am going to use an off camera fill flash, what should I set my WB to....cloudy or flash...or auto? Please advise. Thank you....

Personally, I've never trusted auto-white balance settings.
Every camera I've used seems to lean toward the cool side...especially in deep shade.
The color temperture of an overcast sky is around 6000K. Electronic Flash is around 5400K.
These values are pretty close and either setting should produce acceptable results, depending upon which part of the scene is most important.
You might also consider a manual setting in the middle (5600K).

To be sure, you can bracket several exposures using slightly different WB settings.

Thanks Bob. I know what you mean about Auto WB, I just mentioned it because it is on the camera, but I too do not use it. Great tips...thank you...I guess I could always change the temperture in Camera Raw, but really like all to be perfect "in Camera". Thanks again...Cheers...Dino
