Lens Cleaning What is the best way to clean the exterior of a lens ? I have a lens that has become a little sticky on the outside elements.

Thanks for the answer to my question Gregory. You realize I am only asking about the lens housing, and not the glass itself. I have lens wipes and cleaning solutions, but they do not seem to work on my problem. Anymore suggestions? Thanks

I would use the lens wipes to carefully wipe away the sticky stuff. But only if their are just moist - not dripping wet. If not sticky, I use a Giotto Rocket to blow the dust away, use a soft lens brush to sweep out the crevices and then do a light wiping with a micro-fiber cloth.

Sorry about that. The glass parts are called elements so that's where the confusion came from. Since it's the outside, I've used regular glass cleaner. Spray it on a cloth or towel, not directly on the lens, and wipe clean. If it's an old lens, the stickyness may be coming from the rubber on the focusing ring starting to deteriorate.

Thanks William and Gregory. I will try your suggestions. I have had this lens for about 10 years, and what Gregory stated about being old applies. It does seem to be the rubber that is the most sticky. The built in lens hood is also hard to pull out. I have always kept the lens in it's case. Maybe the humidity got to it. Thanks to both of you very much.
