This is an image of a perennial sunflower from my yard. I have made some adjustments but was wondering what else I can do to improve it because it looks kind of flat to me.

Thanks,

Lucy

Hi Lucy, you are correct in your own constructive critique of this photo. How about a painterly effect? oil or impasto or watercolor? That is what first came to mind. Have you tried a good post process software such as Topaz adjust for it? That may help a little. I think it would look great painted.

Show us what you do with it.

Mary

I'm with Mary! You could do all sorts of good stuff with Topaz Adjust. If you don't have it, I highly recommend it.

Thanks Mary and Carolyn. I do have Topaz Adjust and did use it with just a little enhancement. My biggest concern is that I might overdo it. It did not occur to me to use a painterly or watercolor. I will give that a try.

Hi Lucy, I was playing around with a similar photo on my computer with oil painting by alien skin snap art. that is a wonderful program full artsy choices. then I put a flood filter on top of the painted version. It looked really cool. Of course it took it to abstract level. But if you want to save this photo it is a choice. Next choice would be to shoot this flower again with a tripod to get it very crisp. Mehdi has the flood filter and I think it is free or very inexpensive. I've had it so long I dont remember. Carolyn is correct. Topaz adjust is worth the $ and is a must for all my photos.

Thanks Mary. I will try to find the alien snap art. Your flower with the oil painting and flood filter is beautiful. I do have the flood filter and will try it as well. I did use a tripod with the flower as well as mirror lockup and my timer. I am sending the Topaz Adjust version after I played with it. It definitely has added more to to the picture. Again, thanks for your help. It is always appreciated.

Lucy

  Hi Lucy & Mary,
Another fun program is Corel Painter. I have version X (ten) and a 6x8 Wacom tablet which I haven't used in a long time - so Thank you both for reminding me to use the tools I have :)
Lately, I have been shooting so much (festivals & Senior portraits) and just using ACR to process and I sometimes dont take the time to go back and experiment with images and give them a little more love with my edits. I need to get a little more imaginative with some of my Senior pic edits and if anyone has a tool & technique they would like to share - I would be most appreciative.
Love in Light,
Carlton

  Very Nice Mary,
I'll buy this tonight. I have Topaz Adjust so I am familiar with their programs :)
I will start a new thread for another question so I dont hijack this one :)
Blessings,
Carlton
