Photography Question

Jodi-Ann Jones

Which fisheye lens is best?

Hi
I have a Canon 50D DSLR and would like to extend my lens capacity to include a fisheye lens. I am starting from a zero base here and would appreciate any advice and suggestions about which lens would be the best to acquire. What would be the most important considerations? Performance is what I am after. Price is not particularly an issue.
Many thanks
Jodi Jones

I am a Nikon guy, however, heard a lot of good stuff about the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens which is considered by many as the only non-L lens whose quality matches an "L" lens and give you a very reasonable wide-angle look specially at 10mm.

EF-S 10-22, while a very good wide angle zoom, is not a fisheye lens.
There are two types of fisheye lens. (1) Circular, or spherical, fisheye gives 180 degree view in all directions, but that necessarily means a circular image centered in the middle of the frame.
(2) full-frame fisheye fills the entire rectangular image frame, but the angle of view is less, giving 180 degree only in the diagonal.
If price is no object, Canon's EF 8-15 f/4L USM Fisheye might be the "best" full-frame fisheye for a 50D. If used on a 5D or 1Ds series it gives circular fisheye at 8mm and full-frame fisheye at the long end. A similar and very good full-frame fisheye for crop cameras like the 50D is the Tokina 10-16 f/3.5-4.5 DX Fisheye.
For circular fisheye on a 50D, I could be wrong, but I think the only lens available the Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM.

Whoops, got the Tokina lens model wrong. The fisheye zoom is the 10-17 f/3.5-4.5 DX Fisheye. The 10-16 is a "normal" f/2.8 rectilinear wide angle.

  Hi Jodi-Ann,
I have the Sigma 8mm fisheye and shoot with full frame, it is a true 180 degree view and I have to be careful to keep my feet out of the frame when shooting straight ahead :) It runs about $900.
The Canon 15mm Fisheye is about $600 but I have not used this lens.
Fisheye's are fun.
Cheers,
Carlton

Thank you all very much for not only recommending / advising which lens might be best for me, but also for explaining to me - Jon - that there are two types. I've made a note of the various options suggested and will do some research which I am sure will lead me back here to ask you more questions!
Much appreciated gentlemen :-)
Regards
Jodi
