Photography Question

opening NEF files in photoshop elements 6

I have a Nikon camera and was curious to know if there was a way to open NEF files in photoshop elements 6.0. Everytime I try to open it, it says that it's the wrong type of file. Is there a way around this, or do I have no other choice but to shoot in jpegs? Thanks!

  Hi Jennifer,

Elements 6.0 probably is older than your Nikon camera so it does not "know" the NEF-Files (each new camera has a new RAW file format).

One way around this little problem is to download the free DNG converter from adobe.com. This software batch-converts all your NEF files into DNG files. Elements 6 should be able to open the DNGs (don't know for sure because I don't use Elements).

Hope this helps

Rainer

You should have gotten a software package with your Nikon camera that will open those NEF files.
Capture NX was included with my D-300 and whenever I shoot in RAW (NEF) I open the file there, then save-as TIFF to allow the photo to be edited with my other programs.
..or you can save that extra step and shoot in TIFF format all of the time if your camera allows.
(I've scrupulously compared photos shot as NEF and TIFF and after editing, I can see no visible difference between the two.)

  Hi Rainer,
I downloaded the DNG converter and when I go to select files to open through the converter, it doesn't recognize any of the NEF files. How do I get change this? Have I done something wrong?

  Hi Jennifer,

I haven't used the DNG converter for a long time so I am not sure what the issue is. Generally you can't open the NEF files in the converter, it just converts the NEF files to DNG files. Then you can open them with Elements 6 or rather with the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that comes with Elements.

However, you didn't mention which Nikon Camera you have. If it is a brand new model that came out just a few weeks ago, then may be the DNG Converter has not yet been updated to recognize this cameras RAW files. If so, you need to wait for some more weeks until Adobe provides the next update.

  Hi Rainer,
Thanks, I did end up figuring it out. I'm not sure what happened, but it's working now!
