SB-800 Speedlight Trouble OK, weird/scary. Last night, after using my Nikon SB-800 on a stroboframe above my camera, it emitted a short series or really fast flashes, like a strobe light. What was that? Never had that happen before. Today, it did the same thing. Last night, I had it on full power, today at -1. Am I in danger of frying it!!??

I haven't had that response, but my flash wasn't operating correctly while on a stroboframe, so I placed a strip of electrical tape on the stroboframe to keep the flash contacts from contacting the metal on the stroboframe. If your stroboframe is metal, I would try that.

Were you pressing your DOF preview button at the time? If so, your flash was adding light to help you better see your DOF through the viewfinder. Look in your manual - Nikon calls it 'modeling flash.' Otherwise I don't know what it would be.

What camera are you shooting and do you have the speedlight set on TTL? For example, when I am shooting my Nikon D200 the flash will strobe to allow for the correct ligthing for the exposure I have set for the scene I am shooting; however, my Nikon D5000 regardless of the setting will fire just a one time flash. I recommend you read your manual for the flash and for the camera you are using.

By accident did you switch to high speed sync? I believe that will pulse the flash as you described

Vickie, I do have my flash set to TTL and it's with the Nikon D700. I've been using them together for about 6 months and just noticed this "stobing" the past couple times I've used it. I will check the sync speed also as suggested. I just don't want to ruin my flash by doing something incorrect!!

I was assuming this only happened when on the stroboframe. If it occurs when not on the stroboframe, make sure in the LCD window of the flash that it's not set on RPT but it sounds like monitor pre-flashes. Consult your manual in more detail and I think you will find the answer. If you don't have a manual you can download it at http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/Speedlights/SB-800.pdf Good luck.
