How Does this all work!

I am new here and hoping to start taking a few classes soon too! I Think I have a bright future but I always want to learn more.

My question is, how does this site work! I have now entered 4 images into contest over the last 4 days. Now what. Also I have been looking at others photographs but not sure if there is anymore to do here?

First, make sure your gallery is enabled to show Editor's Picks..Then watch to see if the EP emblem pops up under your photo..(they run way behind sometimes)..right now they have done EPs for the 1st through the 4th of October. If you don't get an EP, your shot will go no further in the contest. If you get one, you know you have made it past round 1..(the rest of the rounds are blocked)..Sometime around the middle of November, they will put out the finalists page. You can find that either on the BP home page under the picture,or like many of us, tag onto the QnA question regarding EP's for whatever month you are interested in. That way you can keep up easier since you will get a flood of emails when they start up with the EPs again. You have some nice shots in your gallery. I especially like the people.
Now all you have to do is wait! The thread you want to tag onto for October is www.betterphoto.com/forms/QnAdetail.asp?threadID=35014
Just check the box to have them email you when someone comments.
Good luck and welcome! You will like it here, everyone is friendly and helpful.

Commenting on photos you like that have been entered by other members also is a good way to "meet" and make friends. And, you might join a few of the many clubs that are active at the site -- or even start your own.

  Welcome to BP, Jeffrey!
Carolyn summarized the Contest - once you enter, it is a waiting game to find out whether your images placed in the Contest Winners or Finalists. (The results for the September Contest will probably be posted by BP sometime next week... Finalists get announced first, then a few days later, we learn the 2nd, 1st and Grand Winners.)

As for your question, how does the site work...

You've already set up a gallery, one of the principal features BP offers---gallery space to share your photos with the world. As Monnie said, commenting on photos you like, shot by others, is a great way to virtually meet some of the members, and take in a wide variety of photographic styles; BP has some truly spectacular photographers.

You've already entered the Contest, which is another (extremely popular) feature of the website... It can be *quite* addictive, and it is a huge contest, currently averaging about 19,000+ entries every single month--so don't get discouraged if you don't win anything; only 111 images each month get awarded a Gold Medal (100 as 2nd Place, 10 as 1st Place, just 1 as Grand Prize). Many more images make Finalist (ie, a "3rd Place" or "Runner Up" basically)---last month set a record, and about 1800 images made it to Finalist. All Golds are then drawn from that pool of Finalists each month.) Best of luck to you with your entries!

The two other big features of BP are the online class offerings (that is arguably BP's primary business, offering photography education) and the member discussion forums. BP has a large roster of talented professional photographers who teach the various online courses, covering a very wide range of topics. The Discussion Forum is where you can post questions (or post answers to other questions) on any conceivable photography topic, and tap into the members' shared knowledge via their responses. To get to the Forum area, sign into BP, click the link for your Member Center, and then you'll see a series of links in the upper part of the screen---not the main BP big links---right under where it would say "Jeffrey's Member Center". One of those links is Discussions/QA; that link gets to the Forum threads. Very useful information out there, and BP has a slew of members who, between them all, have probably encountered every photographic situation out there, and so someone inevitably can answer a particular question.

I just hit my 5th anniversary as a BP member last week; it is a very friendly, fun website, with some top-notch talent in members and instructors. Enjoy!

(Clearly I need some coffee---or a nap---just realized I told you how to get to the Forums, when in fact, you posted your question in the Forums, so you already know that ;)

Thanks for all the help and I am trying to get a new photo posted everyday~ I am moving right now and trying to set a home studio. Also I have a few location shoots coming up and my camera is always near me. I really appreciate the warm welcome and the time it took to answer my questions. I sure I will have more. Glad some people are enjoying some of my work. Hope to post much more. Trying to get some time to leave some msg on others that I like. I promise to do so! I like the forum area....

HERE Is a big question that I am having trouble answering now!!!

What class should I take first. There are so many and I have a wish list of almost 15 of them just not sure where to start~ Any suggestions???

Do any of your "top 15" wishlist classes address areas of learning that you feel deficient in, more than the rest of the class topics? ie, you currently are having trouble with, or need training about topic X, and there's a class just about X. (For instance, when I got my first dSLR, I knew I wanted to learn about ensuring good exposure--even though I also seriously wanted some classes in advanced Photoshop techniques, etc. Since I figured the exposure of an image is the basic starting point for everything that follows, I took that class ahead of any others I was interested in.)
If there isn't one that speaks to an area of learning you feel you are lacking, then I'd simply choose the one that excites you most, or the one that best fits your free-time schedule at this point.
You might want to share your list of top 5 or so "most-interested" classes here, and if someone else has taken one of them, they could chime in on that specific class..

Lets See I will list some of the ones that get me excited. This is hard cause I believe I am deficient in all areas and always want to learn more! Looking at my images does anyone have a thought of what I should work on first? Here are my favorites in no real order!

Composition Boot Camp

Portrait Photography Lighting on Location and in the Studio

Portrait Photography Using Available Light

The Pursuit of Light

Creative Light and Composition

Image Design: Revealing Your Personal Vision

The Business of Photography

Self-Discovery in Photography: Where Does Your Passion Lie?

So there is a starter list! There are more but I will leave it like that for now!

Based on that list, I see 3 areas to lump them into...

Basics of Photography:
Composition Boot Camp, Pursuit of Light, Creative Light, Image Design/Personal Vision, Self-Discovery.

Portrait Photography:
Lighting on Location, Available Light.

Business of Photography

Myself, I'd prioritize them in that order of 3 headings. I'd focus on those "Basics" first; perhaps Comp and Pursuit of Light. If Portraiture is a big interest of yours, I'd try one of those next. I'd end with "The Business" class, since in my view, it won't make too much sense to start a Business Class before you've really got a solid, proficient grip on photography. Kinda putting the cart before the horse, otherwise!

But what if my horse is lazy! Just joking!!! Thanks.

So what would be number one! I would like to test the site out first with a 4 week course! That should help narrow!

Your image will have a silvery Editors Pick logo displayed below it in your gallery view, and in "large" view when you click a single thumbnail from your gallery.

Jeff, be sure that your EPs are configured to display, otherwise they won't be visible. Or switch to classic display mode.

This is probably a silly question, Jeff, but are you sure you actually entered your photos in the contest when you uploaded them? I go through the entries several times day as I make my comments, and I don't recall seeing yours in there recently (and I've been looking for you...) Photos not in the contest won't earn EPs, which is why I mention it. Anyhow, I'll keep watching for your entries!!

Click basic membership. It's in the same area where you configure the layout of your gallery. At bottom are the options to display eps, potd, etc. You can also see them if you switch to "classic" gallery. They automatically display in classic mode.

Alright! As of today I have EP's on 10 out of the 12 photographs that I entered. Is this high??? Really I think it should be 12 out of 12 but what can I say LOL!!!!

I would love to know why the two were not picked! Just so I can Learn! In that case I would like to know why the others were picked!

I will post the two that did not Get EPs and if anyone want to throw a guess at why they were not picked! Thanks in Advance!

I looked, Jeffrey. You have a wonderful gallery already and it won't be that long before your work is getting noticed beyond the EP level (and I'm not talking about the "Honorable Mention" LOL).
I would say that Just for Laughs has everything going for it -- color, interesting angle and lines, composition -- except focus where you really want it and that is in the face. I know an action shot in low light requires lots of luck and I don't think you were quite lucky enough. You could try this again, but I would not. On the other hand, if Night Light were my image, I would resubmit it in a heartbeat. Just wait until November, go to your member center, edit, drop down the submit to contest and put it right back in. It's a lovely night scene, perfect in black and white, and I'll bet it will pick one up on the second round.

One final thing but very important.

Passing judgment (as I have just done) on a photograph or any piece of art is a very subjective process. What I have just given you is just my opinion, worth no more and no less than anyone else's. And that's essentially what an EP is, too -- one person's opinion. Someone else may well have a different opinion.

Thank you very much and I complete understand that I am asking for opinions. That is all I take them as! No More no Less. So thanks

I agree that the Just for laughs shot is not in perfect focus I just thought the story would out weight that. Guess not.

Now I was truly dissappointed with the night shot cause if has everything I look for in a shot! Thanks for the comments

I hope some more opinions would come in just to see what people thinK!

  Hey Jeffrey;
Once each month's contest closes (ie, Oct. closed yesterday at midnight Pacific Time), the elimination rounds begin... any EP images go into the pool of potentials, for a few rounds of hidden judging and elimination. Finalists are announced on BP later in the current month, for the prior months' results---so, mid-November, BP will announce which images made Finalist, and if any of yours did, your EP "badge" will change to a Finalist badge in your gallery, for that image, and you'll get an email from BP telling you it made it. A few days after THAT announcement, BP will announce the "Golds"---Second Place, First Place and Grand Prize winning images, chosen from just the Finalists.
If you watch the Forum threads, there's usually a "counting down to Finalists" thread that is fun to participate in to pass the time waiting, eagerly, for the results to come out...
But for now, you've got anywhere from 12-15 days before you should reasonably expect to hear anything on the Oct. Finalists decisions.
