I hope you kept the receipt and can return the RC-6. The 40D does not have a built-in receiver for use with the wireless control, so the RC-6 cannot operate it. You need a either wired remote, like the RS-80N3 or similar from 3rd party makers, or a 2-piece wireless setup: a receiver that plugs into the camera's N3 socket, and a sender you hold to activate it. Canon makes a wireless set for this purpose, the LC-5, but it's ridiculously expensive (about $350). There are lots of 3rd party alternatives for less than $60. Here's one as an example (I haven't used it, so this is not to be taken as a recommendation for this particular set.

Thank-you. I guess that would explain my trouble and lack of available information. I had checked on-line,only to have my usually reliable camera store people tell me this was right. So its good to know im not crazy, and sometimes the online info is correct!! Thank-you, Jon C!!
