Photography Question

I need a rec for a great photo printer

Hi,

I have my own photo business and currently use an Epson stylus photo R1800. I live in Saudi and do most of my own photo printing. not so many good labs out here. Anyway, the poor little stylus is about 3 years old, and seems to be dying a slow death. So, I think I'm going to need a new printer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a new printer? I print up to A3 size now (420 mm x 297 mm), and I want a printer that will create excellent quality, long lasting images! It needs to be good quality and reliable, because it is really hard to get things fixed around here!

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Angie Wood

  Hello Angela,
I bought a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 a couple of years ago and after a couple of months of use, the printer feed quit working. At that point I added the costs of quality paper, inks & the cost of the printer itself and decided to start having all my prints made at MPIX. Its also hard for my $400 printer to compete with the $25,000 machines they use :) I have read too many stories about mechanical failures with several different manufacturers to have real trust in them.
I have heard some good things about the Epson R1400 but cant speak from experience.
I am happy with using MPIX and will continue doing so.
I am not sure if MPIX offers service for Saudi but if not, there are probably other online professional print companies that do.
Good Luck,
Carlton

  Angela,

If you are making a LOT of prints weekly than I concure with Carlton. I do believe that you would be better served with the Canon Pixma Pro 9500 II.
It is more expensive than the 9000 but it uses Lucia inks that are pigment based opposed to dye base. Therefore the prints will last longer. Yes they are more expensive too. Darn, there are no free tickets. LOL
Both printers will make prints from 4X6 to A3 and A3+ size. For paper I found that Ilford Smooth Pearl comes out with the best consistency. But that is with a Canon i9900 with dye base inks.
If you want to make larger prints try the iPF 5100 and you can use the 17" wide paper even in rolls with the optional attachment.
All canon printers come with a universal plug, a plug adaptor may be necessary but not a converter.

Best of luck,

Lynn

Thanks for the help, guys!! I'll look into the Canon printers. I've not used MPIX before, but I have had prints done at WHCC and I've always been happy with the quality....just a bit put off by the cost of shipping out to Saudi Arabia.
