Photography Question

Joyce M. Dubberly

how to calculte shutter speed

I do not understand the numbers on my camera for shutter speed. How do I calculate if I want it to be a shutter speed of 2 seconds? I simply cannot figure it out, and I have not been able to find any books or programs that simplify this for me. Please Help!!!

It sounds as if you are new to photography. What camera do you use? May I suggest that you check and see if Better Photo.com has a course for it.
Everyone of those numbers have a meaning and the course on the camera will allow you to ask questions as you go along step-by step.

What do you want to take a photo of that you think will take 2 seconds? That is a rather long exposure used for certain tecniques or in darkness. We normally do not even take photos of a New Moon with an exposure that long.

  Hi Lynn,
I have always used the auto mode simply because I don't understand the equation of all the numbers. My camera is a Nikon d80, and yes I am enrolled in Lynne Eodices online class of Betterphoto.com. I am to shoot images with blurring such as taillights on autos. I didn't necessarily mean that I had to have a 2 second shutter speed. I was only using that as a reference to know what the numbers would be on my camera for such a shutter speed.

Always read the manual if you have it. If you don't, a simple internet search can sometimes lead you to a manual you can download.
Current cameras with a lcd display will have shutter speeds that are expressed as a fraction are displayed with just the denominator. So 1/4 of a second will be displayed as 4.
1/500 of a second will be displayed as 500
When you get below 1/4 of a second, it'll probably be expressed in decimal numbers. And the way it will be displayed is a number with a " next to it.
So 1/3 of a second is .33 , so you'll see it displayed as 0.3". Or something similar.
A shutter speed of 2 seconds will be displayed as 2'

  Hi Gregory,

The manual that I received with my camera was very poorly defined. Your info helps tremendously. I regret to sound so ignorant, but I have been unable to find anything that explains the simplistics of the camera. It is like everyone thinks that everyone inquiring knows all of the basics. I think I really need someone with knowledge that could give a hands on course.

Thanks so much!
Joyce

  Gregory,

My camera will show like 16oo, or 25o, etc. What does this mean?

Apparently you are taking the course on How to Take Inspiring Images. Your second week of class will explain a lot about what you asked. Since you are taking a course ask Lynne. This will not only help you it will also give her a better understanding of what additional assistance she can give you.
Besides that she is as nice and knowledgeable as she is pretty.

I am not familiar with Nikons but the numbers that you furnished seem as if they represent shutter speeds. These would be 1/1600 second and 1/250 second. Exposure varies by ISO (sensor sensitivity to light which is adjustable), Aperture (the amount of light striking the sensor) and Shutter speed (how long the light strikes the sensor).

Courses offered at BetterPhoto will shorten the time it takes to learn all of these things. I read at least 3 magazines a month for years because there was so little anywhere else to learn.

You can do a Google Search; e.g., Understanding Exposure, and see lots of books and tips. You could probably do something similar with Youtube. It's a 3-d puzzle..the relation between shutter and aperture, and how it affects depth of field..then factor in ISO. It can be confusing but once you grasp the basics, you'll have much more creative control.

Pertaining to shutter speed, it's what Lynn said about 1/1600 second and 1/250.
I need a correction. A shutter speed of 2 seconds will show as 2", with the quote mark next to it, not 2'
