filter adapter, Canon 100mm f2.8L IS

I recently purchased the beautiful new 100mm f2.8L IS macro lens by Canon, and noticed the an adapter could be purchased to allow the use of "their" filter.

The adapter is the Canon 67 Macrolite Adapter. But, it is for their "special" filters.

My question is can this adapter be used with a step up/down (I get confused) ring and a B+W brand 72 mm polarizer?

Also, is the purpose of the adapter to allow a better fit with the MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash?

I have the macro ring lite and the B&W filter, but am toying with the macro-lite adapter, as I understand that filters will not fit on this lens otherwise. The Canon filters are quite expensive and I doubt as good as those I already have.

Thanking you in advance.

No special adapter is needed to mount filters to the EF 100 f/2.8L IS USM Macro. It has 67mm filter thread.

The 67C Macrolite Adapter is not for any special filters. It's sole purpose is to fit the MR-14EX Macro Ring speedlite to the end of 67mm filter size lenses like the EF 100 f/2.8L IS USM Macro. The speedlite's flash head cannot mount to the end of that lens without it.

Thank you, Jon. The older lens also had problems staying on the MR-14EX macro ring speedlite. Hopefully this adapter will work better. Thank you for replying. ~Bunny

Do I assume correctly that I would need the 67mm -72mm step UP ring to fit a 72mm wide angle slim filter? And, that every lens of a different filter size up to 72mm would need its OWN step-up ring?

Thank you in advance.

One additional question: Is it safer to purchase a B+W brand step up ring when one has the B+W slim polarizer filter? Or, would a less expensive step-up ring do just as well?

Thanks, again.

The EF 100 f/2.8L IS USM has 67mm filter threads. Yes, a 67mm/72mm step-up ring is used to put a 72mm filter on it. Yes, if you have other lenses with different filter diameters, then you would need a step-up ring for each size. Eg. if another other lens has 58mm filter diameter, then you'd need a 58mm/72mm step-up ring to use the 72mm B+W filter with it.

If your other lens has a filter diameter that is wider than 72mm filter (say 77mm), then you could use a step-down ring to put the 72mm filter on it. But that is generally not recommended as the smaller opening will tend to cause vignetting (darken the image corners).

No, the step-up rings do not need to be the same brand as the filter.

The B+W 67-77mm stepup ring is only $28 from B&W. It is of lower cost than many of the other companies step up ring and is made of brass. I seriously doubt that you will find many, if any, lenses that use a filter that is between 67mm and 72mm. So you should be covered. I decided to purchase just the 77mm filters that I need and use step up rings. It is a lot cheaper than purchasing filters for every different size.

I have 2 B&W brand polarizer filter. One covers my 67mm-72mm lenses; the other is 77mm filter size. And, the L lenses that I have are in this range.

If I decide to purchase the 16-35mm superwide f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens, that filter size is 82mm. But most of my work is going in the longer direction rather than wider.

Thank you, Lynn for your feedback.
