Macro Lenses

Question Directed to Kerry Drager:
I am in the Class Track Program and plan on taking "Creative Close-ups" in April. The question is what size of Macro Lense would be best suited for the Class. I use a Nikon D300 Camera.

  Hi Gary,
Good question! I shoot with Nikon gear and use the 105mm macro. Since it's telephoto, it does provide a little more working room between lens and close-up subject than macros in the 50-60mm range. That's important if you shoot bugs. Of course, the longer the macro, the more it costs (so a 105mm costs more than the 50, and a 200mm macro is more than the 105mm). At the same time, the 105 can double as a nice portrait lens.

Another thing to consider: If you aren't positive yet whether macro will be a big part of your shooting life, you could go a less-expensive route. Extension tubes are hollow, fit between lens and camera, and can be used with any lens you already have ... they allow you to focus closer. The disadvantage is that they cut the amount of light that enters the lens by two stops, but your camera meter will auto-compensate ... and for stationary subjects and the use of a tripod (which I always recommend for static scenes), it's not an issue. Also, because extension tubes don't have glass, there's no image quality loss. Plus, you'll never outgrow tubes, since they can supplement any macro lens you buy in the future.

Just a few thoughts, Gary - feel free to followup, and have fun shopping. I look forward to having you in class!

Kerry
