Topaz' new filter - ReMask

Dear photo-friends! Before you buy Topaz’ new filter - ReMask: You can use Photoshop's (CS2) filter "Extract". This is exactly the same as ReMask, only much, much easier and clear to work with and with many more options! In “Extract” you can see what you are working with – and you get no error messages. And it's free! Normally I am a big fan of Topaz’ products, but today I’m very disappointed! 69,99 $ for an existing filter...

Hi, Evy. Just out of curiosity, did you contact Topaz and ask what was different or if there were capabilities not duplicated in PhotoShop?

Cheers,

RK

  Hi RK,
I sent same message as above to Topaz’ Forum at got this answer:
-----
Evy,
Each one their own. Just to clarify for everybody else I have to say:
Remask work in 16 bit images while extraction tool doesn't.
Yes the extraction tool is free and has a nice UI (which Topaz will release in a few months" but Remask is giving me way better results than the extraction tool.
Over the extraction tool, I prefer Fluid Mask which only works in x32 OS.
So, Topaz is a clear winner to my eyes.
My workflow is totally in x64 OS and 16 bits images, so I don't need to change that just to use a different tool.
Don't get me wrong, I still believe the ET and Fluidmask are very good, but the learning curve is steepier in those two and the little disadvantages are huge for me.

BTW – I have also tried “Fluid Mask”. It works perfectly – and it’s cheaper than ReMask.. :)

  Hi, Evy,

Thanks for that. I was curious because I had just received an email about Topaz ReMask and was planning to investigate it.

I use CS4 which no longer has Extract built in (though it is available as a plug-in). My reading from Adobe suggests that is was removed because it doesn't work very well. =^)

I have since had a chance to play with ReMask and I am pretty impressed. Much better than magnetic lasso, e.g. especially for hair/fur. I'm going to compare it to the heavy weights in this arena from Nik and OnOne, though I don't have need enough for masking to justify the price tags of their masking apps.

I looked at Fluid Mask and, unless I'm missing something, it is more expensive than ReMask ($149 v. $69).

But ...

Topaz is offering ReMask for $29 until Oct 31st.

Cheers,

RK
