Looks like a wasp to me Peggy. Probably the species known as the Paper Wasp because their nests are rather like a honeycomb made of thin paper. Let's see who knows better; I'm more of an etymologist than an entomologist. (That should have a few folk reaching for the Websters Dictionaries) Pete

According to Bugguide, it's likely a species of Scoliid Wasp. (...possibly Scolia nobilitata)
