Good Nikon Travel Zoom lens

Hello all!
I have a Nikon D700. I have the 24-70 F/2.8 lens, but am looking into what I should get for more of a travel zoom lens in the 50-300 area? I know all about the Nikon 70-200 F/2.8 lens - but I just can't see myself buying and carrying that huge thing around Europe. I was hoping to find a good range maybe 70-300 lens that is a lot smaller and lighter (obviously it won't be as fast of a lens and that will be ok). I own the Tamrom 28-300 and it's just ok - was wondering if anyone knows about a great Nikon lens in that area that is sharp?
Thank you for any advice/help!
Pam

  Hello Pam,
I am a Canon shooter but every Nikon shooter I know carries the 70-200mm with them and that is for a reason, it is an incredible lens. I went on a trip to Europe last summer with 11 other photographers and every Nikon shooter used their 70-200 lens a lot. Maybe get a Lowepro Flipside or slingshot pack to help you carry it around.
It will be worth its weight when you get home with some spectacular photos :)
my .02,
Carlton

Ok, thanks. I totally get that the 70-200 f/2.8 is a great lens, I've used it before..but like I said - there's no way I'm going to carry it around Europe with me on a whirlwind tour. I'm not doing a photography tour surrounded by other photographers..I'll be with a friend and don't want to hold up our trip much with heavy equipment. With that said.. I again pose the question if anyone has any advice on what other lens is good in the 28-300 or 70-300 zoom range for D700 (full frame)?
Thanks!
Pam

I've never tried the 70-200 f2.8, but my favorite travel lens is my Nikon 18-200VR.

  Hi Pam,
Have you looked at the Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G? It's 17 oz (480g). You'll need a tripod for sharp pics at long focal length.
Here is a review: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70300g.htm

I've opted to bite the bullet and travel with my 70-200mm f2.8, because I already have it, and nothing seems to even remotely compare in the Nikon range. It would be great if they would introduce a lighter weight zoom lens for FX.
Enjoy your trip to Europe!
Nadja

HI,

I am one of those Nikon shooter and the 70-200 2.8 is the best lens you can get. I have a 12 year old one, had to had it repaired once and if absolutely the best.

Thanks everyone...I'm back from my trip and actually learned that most of my photos were done with my nikon 24-70 lens... Love it!
Will look into the 70-200 lens later this year when I can afford it.
Thanks again
