D90 Focus Problems

I just bought a Nikon D90. I upgraded from a D40. Most of my images are out of focus when using autofocus and it doesnt seem to matter what lens I'm using. It's doesnt matter what autofocus mode I'm in either. I checked and rechecked my diopter adjustment and it's good. I've reset back to the default settings with no luck. I don't have a tripod but I have a pretty steady hand, and I can take back to back shots of the same thing with the D40 and the D90 and there is a world of difference. I've read my manual front to back and I've read D90 specific books and numerous forums and articles online. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if something is wrong with my camera. Are there any D90 gurus here that might be able to provide some insight? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Mmm. I'm really starting to wonder if anyone even reads this stuff. Not a lot of activity going on here.

  Hi Jay,
This forum used to be more active but after some recent changes, a few of the regular posters dropped off. I am a Canon shooter but by your description, I would get the D90 checked. Hopefully you bought the D90 from B&H, Amazon or local reputable camera store that will replace it for another one. I manually focus about 1/2 of the time but thats still 50% of my shots that I am using auto focus.
I hope you find something different and if not I hope you can get it fixed or replaced.
Also, invest in a good tripod, it opens up so many more shooting options from nightshots, waterfalls/landscape, macro, etc..
Carlton

I also upgraded from a D40 to a D90 and am having no such issues with the focus on the D90.....really think you should have the camera checked out! :~)

I have D50 and the D90,did you check the the buttons on the side of the lens
are not on manual? That would cause a problem.

I have a Canon 40D, about a year and a half old, and a few weeks ago the autofocus stopped functioning. I have been manual focusing but this is hard to do all of the time so I am looking for a Canon repair service...
