Is it really important to edit in RAW? I've been taking and editing in RAW and haven't had any problems but I just got a canon 50D and found that my editing software doesn't like the new camera's RAW so it won't recognize it. (This seems to be one of the kinks with the new 50Ds). I don't mess with the white balance and pretty much edit straight through (so I'm not saving and then re-opening and editing again). Should I be okay working with JPEGs?

Hi Jodi, You probably need to update your ACR to support the 50D - http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/new.jsp Carlton

Carlton hit the nail on the head as far as updating to support your camera. Another thing to consider is that raw is lossless, meaning you won't lose any data like you will by working on your jpegs and saving them. I'd stick to editing the raw files unless it is for something that isn't critical to you. Jeff

thanks carlton and jeff. what's the ACR? I don't think I can update because I don't have adobe. I use corel and haven't been able to find any updates for that yet but i'll continue to look. in the meantime, I seem to be stuck for now.

Jodi, ACR =Adobe Camera Raw. Doesn't the software that came with your camera have a stand alone raw converter? Seems to me you should be able to use it then export to your editing program. Jeff

I use the Canon Raw Converter (Digital Photo Professional) that comes with the camera. Be sure to check the Canon website because they update it quite often.
