Photography Question

Robert F. Walker

What Quality Lens to buy?

I will be purchasing a Nikon D90 Digital Camera, now I need to decide on a very good all around Telephoto Zoom Lens. I have researched the many choices from Nikon, although I want to hear from Photographers Personal experiences with Lens choices, both Positive and Negetive Please. I will be mainly using the Lens for Weddings, Portraits,Sports,Family Photos, Vacations.

  24-70 f/2.8 and
70-200 f/2.8 VR
I'm shooting Canon right now, but my buddy just picked up the 24-70 and it is excellent.

Yes, any of the f/2.8 ED lenses from Nikon are excellent to superlative!

The only all purpose lens is the 18-200mm VR and it's really very good, though not of professional quality.

The following Test Report is useful:

And, to have a really tack-sharp portrait lens, you can pick up the Nikon 50mm 1.8 - this will give you excellent photos as well as being really fast if/when needed indoors. Plus, it is only around $100, yet is highly rated for image quality.

I just purchased the new 24-120 f4 vr11 and fined it to be a good carry around lens. A bit cheaper than the f2.8's zoom lenses. Excellent quality images as well.

Hi Robert......I do not need the really fast lenses, so this may not be too applicable. But, that notwithstanding, I have a Nikon D300, and have the Nikor 70-300mm 4.5-5.6, and love it up to about the 250mm area. Also, I have the Nikor 16-85mm 3.5-5.6, and really love the sharpness of it.

Best luck.......Jerry

Quality and all purpose lens should never be part of the same question.

If you are planning to get paid for the photos the two lenses that Christopher S. mentioned along with Peter B's for any 2.8 ED lenses is all the further you need to read.

If you are only going to take photos for your own enjoyment with small prints up to 8x10 Peters suggestion about the 18-200m VR makes good sense.

However take a look at what Jeremy W. had to say about the 70-300 mm f4.5-5.6 lens about shooting beyond 250mm and the lens has been restricted to f5.6 since probably at least 150mm. The zoom range on that lens is only 4.28x and there is already problems.

Robert.......I just want to reiterate the great value and exceptional quality of the Nikor 50mm 1.8. It lets in lots of light, it has great quality, and it is only abot $100.00 With the crop for th D90, this makes a great portrait lens with outstanding bokah.

Robert: Nikon may make other 70-300mm lenses.

This is the best one: 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR Nikkor

Conclusion
This lens really surprised us. At a street price of under $600 for a 70-300mm with VR built in, we figured Nikon would have had to cut corners someplace to hit the price point.

Other than the slight softness and rather high CA from 200-300mm though, the performance of the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor (yeesh, that's a mouthful) was really excellent.

And build quality, AF speed and accuracy and overall handling were excellent as well.
All in all, this is a really great tele zoom

robert - I should've been more specific - I also use the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor - the VR does help a few stops, and the lens is certainly more sufficient than my needs. However, anything over about 250mm tends to sufffer a bit on sharpness, although with a really small aperture, it still does quite well.
