Hello Sandra,
Welcome to Better Photo.
I dont know what your experience level is but the 1st place to start is proper exposure and there are lots of classes & books here to get you up to speed quickly.
Are you planning to get a DSLR soon ?
I am not familiar with the Olympus 730 but it looks like a point & shoot type camera where you usually let the camera decide what the exposure parameters will be. Does this have full manual control ?
In you City Streets photo you have very dark areas with the people & lower part of the frame and a blank looking sky.
The 2nd photo is better exposed (still have dark areas) but then there are things like the overhead wires & cables that detract from the photo.
The wonderful thing about digital and the software for the digital darkroom (like Photoshop, Elements, etc..) is that you can correct many problems with software like lightening up dark areas, remove wires and enhance colors & balance. You can select the sky and darken to bring it out more or even replace the whole sky with a better looking one.
One thing to remember is that the camera is not as smart as the human eye. We can see details in shadows and in bright sunlight objects where as the camera will record the dark areas as black and the bright areas will be white (or blown out). HDR imaging is a way to get the camera to record separate dark & light images and blend the images together to make it more realistic.

Here is a photo a friend of mine sent me that the eagle was composed nicely but it had a blown out white background, I replaced the sky and it totally changed the image.

Give us a little background about what your goals are and again Welcome.

Learning photography is a very fun adventure and if you decide you want to get better, this is a great place to get going.

Good Luck,
Carlton
