Photography Question

resizing for contest

i hope someone can help me here. I have been pondering my recent lack of success in the contest and felt I should carefully review the contest rules to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong, thereby disqualifying myself with each submission. While trying to determine the proper re-size before upload, I found a number of different instructions at the BP site, to include: no shorter than 1600 pixels on the long side, no longer than 480 pixels on the short side, and no longer than 500 pixels on the short side??? What is the appropriate size for a contest entry? Also, can I assume that an image selected as an Editor's Choice is eligible for further selection as a Finalist or Winner? Sorry to be so long winded, would appreciate any help or suggestions - THANKS!

I'm not surprised you are confused, Gene. The instructions are vague and inconsistent. Resize your own image to 800 pixels on the long side. Add sharpening to taste, save as a TIFF, and use the Alternate Image Uploader. It will remain unchanged.

Gene, to piggy back on what Steve says....800 pixel width is the new rule...it's easy to confirm...just do some tests...upload an image at 3000 pixels, then upload one at 800 pixels, and another one at 700. Open up three browsers, and compare all three. The 3000 pixel one will resize down to 800. The 700 one will stay at 700.

I've seen contest entries sized anywhere from 500 to 800 pixels, so I don't think it matters. I think what you're asking is...what's the largest size image I can enter (or display), on the BP contest site...and it's 800 on the maxium side.

I also sharpen and save as TIFF..And finally, if your photo got an EP, then it's in the running for finalist, for that particular month. Theres several more elimination rounds, though. No EP...then zero chance.

I have a question about TIFF vs. JPEG. Do you find it makes that much of a difference? I used to upload TIFFS but switched back to JPEGS to save file size. What is the reason you use TIFFS?

I'm not sure whether there is a difference between TIFF and JPEG in the uploading to BP, Deb. I save the resized image as a TIFF because I frequently work on it further and don't want any loss by saving it again as a JPEG. Besides the resized for BP TIFF is seldom larger than 1.3 MB. I save the full size file as a JPEG to save space.

Deb, I use TIFs because awhile back, I could see subtle quality differences. But maybe it was wishful thinking. I do know Jim Miotke had recommended to use TIF on some forum exchange...so I just got in the habit of doing them in TIF for upload. The other day, I uploaded a JPG and a TIF..same image, and had the browser up side by side and couldn't tell a difference. I recommend you do a similar experiment.
