Using Alien Bee B1600 with Nikon D70s

If I use an Alien Bee B1600 strobe (or any off-camera strobe)with my Nikon D70s, would I be able to use TTL metering, or would I have to set the strobe power manually?

  Gerald,

TTL metering is (rarely) used with external strobes. TTL metering has no idea how bright the scene will be at the instant the strobe fires. Camera metering is useless in measuring strobe intensity..Use manual mode when shooting with external strobes.

The reason I say rarely is that the Nikon Creative System will allow flashes such as the Nikon SB-800 to communicate with the camera. Although TTL is the improper term in this case, it is called "Commander" mode.

"or would I have to set the strobe power manually?"

Proper exposure with any strobe lighting setup is a balance between strobe output power, f/stop and sometimes ambient light. When ambient light will contribute to the image, then shutter speed plays a role.

If TTL metering meters DURING exposure it will know when there's been enough light and shut it off IF it can communicate with the strobe(s)/flash gun(s).

The problem is that on board camera meters do NOT meter (during) the exposure.
