Alexander, I believe Nature and Landscape should be 3130? There's a little typo under monthly theme as well... but curious we still see numbers falling! Any theories as to the difference? Richard

Alexander, thanks for posting these! Richard, I think the "general" drop off is because folks must have a basic gallery and/or enrolled in a class, to participate in the contest. I think BP made this change last Spring, although not quite sure exact date. If you look at the totals for Jul - Oct, the average was ~23,065. Nov and Dec were lower, but maybe it was partly due to the holidays. My bet is the totals for Jan will return to 23,000 or so. We could always ask Jim Miotke..he'd probably have the best theory as to the difference.

Hello Ol' Eagle Eye! Yes, one should not be in a hurry to post the message three seconds after closing! You ARE correct! I made it 3139 and 15.4% on my Excel sheet for Nature & Landscape, and the typo for the monthly theme: 2027 entries and 10% for Togetherness. And, Richard and Ken re "dropoff". A couple of months ago I looked at the "activities" on the freebie sites and did not see great activities from those sites. See my post http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=32569 My, purely personal, feeling, is that the contest is simply going through a "phase". It was new, it was fun, everybody jumped on board, the EPs were raining down quickly. In the meantime the contest is "old hat" for the early users and it is nourished by the "hardcore gang" and some newcomers. The thrill seekers are off to new hunting grounds. By the way, my wife Christine - she is the photographer in the family - still has oodles of fun with the contest and submits almost daily an entry and checks daily if, maybe, by chance, an EP has appeared on her site and if maybe, perhaps, a finalist has landed! Ken, I agree Jim and his gang can surely analyze the changes better than my simple totals. The website logs would be a treasure bag for some data mining. Which submitters have submitted each month how many pictures; what percentage do these represent; how many newcomers; etc.... However I doubt that Jim will cough up such statistics! Oh... would they make interesting discussions in the forum! "Loverly" and "expealidocious" ... you know what I mean and we do now our friends who would chime in here! Aaaaaah... supercalifragilistic... Alexander

Alexander, I'm just now checking on your totals thread--thanks again for posting it! I always find it interesting to see the numbers. I tend to think your feeling about the contest "going through a phase" is right. There may be some people who feel they've gotten all they can out of it, and they are moving on to other challenges.

Colleen and Alexander, you may be right about the 'going through a phase' for many of you. However, for someone like me who has just started recently entering the contest (since Sep 2008), it is extremely enjoyable and challenging at the same time. Not only do I think my photography is improving but also the joy of getting an EP keeps the interest alive. However, not getting an EP on some of my favorite shots leaves me wondering what did I do wrong and that in turns motivates me to do better and keep going. Richard, I think the difference is just due to the settling down effect after the recent changes at BP. I am certain that it will stabilize at around the current levels. To really increase the numbers, BP has to come up with something new for the existing members and to attract new members that is something which Jim Miotke and the BP team should be contemplating. All in all, I believe BP is the best photographic site for learning and enjoyment, and for that my hats off to the BP team.
