Lens for Canon XTI

Looking for advice on a lens for taking my son's high school basketball and soccer pictures. I own the Canon XTI and was interested in the Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Lens. Thanks.

Considering that basketball is shot indoors under fairly dim lighting (in a high school setting), the lens you listed above will make getting acceptable results hard.

You'd be far better off with the Tamron or Sigma 70-200/2.8 lenses. You can find these for under $700 if you look. Get a 1.4x teleconverter for an additional $150 or thereabouts and you'd have a 98-280/4 lens.

The problem with these do-it-all lenses is that the jack of all trades is the master of none. You get a super-wide focal length range... but you give up image quality and a wide aperture.
