Lens for Rebel XTI

Upon asking my boyfriend what he'd like for Christmas, he started describing a lens that goes over his current lens. He said it will take photos of items very close up, such as bugs, without them being fuzzy/out of focus. I went to a camera store, and they showed me a lens that was $529. He was quite sure it was a very simple item that would cost under $100. He called it a "microscopic lens" but the employee at the store had no idea what I was talking about.
Please help!

I think they go between the lens and camera, but could he have meant extension tubes??

A close-up lens, it screws onto the front of your lens via the filter threads. You'll need to know the filter diameter of your boyfriend's lens.
See, for example, the Canon 250D in 58mm filter size at B&H Photo, LINK

if he's going to ask for Photography stuff for Christmas, he needs to be even more specific. For the last few years my husband would find lenses on local classifieds and show them to me ... he never picked the right lens until just recently.

For example, I want a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS. My husband would find a Canon 70-200mm f4. HUGE difference, but he didn't get it until recently. If he would have bought me a lens or other accessory, I'm certain he would have picked something I didn't want and wouldn't use much.

If your boyfriend wants some some photography equipment and he doesn't tell you exactly what he wants (written down, with specs and all ... or better yet, a web link that goes directly to what he wants) maybe he'd love a gift card to a photography store? Does www.bhphotovideo.com offer giftcards???

It might be the Kenko extension tubes...see link below:

Agree with Cherylann...he needs to tell you exactly what he wants...

No, Ken, extension tubes don't go on top of the existing lens, as Jaimie described. Like Jon said: that's a close-up lens.

Close-up lenses are very cheap compared to regular macro lenses. And since you get what you pay for I don't think the boyfriend will be very happy with the image quality... It really is well below par!

If I were you, Jaimie, I'd give him a (photography) gift voucher. Because if he would then get that close-up lens that would be HIS choice. So if that close-up lens subsequently turns out to be less than anticipated he cannot blame you...

Have fun!
