Canon software for a Mac

I have a question on the Canon software. I purchased the Canon Digital Rebel SLR and I downloaded the Canon software, Digital Photo Professional and zoom brower into my Dell PC with XP system. My PC is old and is running very slow and may not last much longer.. I recently purchased the Macbook pro. I know that the Mac has iphotos but I wanted to download the Canon software because the DPP downloads the information on how the pictures are taken. I have not shot in RAW yet. After downloading the software, I uploaded my pictures and found that the pictures were not as clear and vibrant with lack of color, when viewing them in the Image Browser for Mac. And when I went to bring up the DPP, the Mac prompt that the DPP requires a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or more, and about 32,000 colors or higher.

When I changed the display to 1024 x 768, the DPP opened but none of my pictures where seen. I can only see my pictures in the image browser. So, I transferred one of the pictures to the Mac iphoto and the picture looks totally different, ei: vibrant and clear.

Is there anyone who has experienced this that can help me. Thanks Kim

Hi Kim,

"I wanted to download the Canon software because the DPP downloads the information on how the pictures are taken."

Every photo editor worth its salt does that, Kim.

When on a Mac it's advisable to use Apple editing software (iPhoto or Aperture), or one of the big independent names: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, PaintShopPro, Adobe LightRoom, the GIMP, etc. etc.

When you connect your camera (with memory card in it) to your Mac, either iPhoto or Aperture should open automatically and ask if you would like to import the photos from your card/camera into the app. (You can change that behavior in the Preferences).

Try that and see how it goes.

Have fun!

Thanks. Should I uninstall the canon software from the Mac. It is not working correctly. If I get the aperture program will it show my picture information ei. shutter speed, metering etc? I appreciate your help. I am a bit frustrated. Kim

No immediate need to uninstall DPP, but if it is not working correctly I would anyway. Use AppDelete to get rid of ALL the DPP files, not just the one in the applications folder. If you leave DPP for the time being: somewhere in its Preferences you should disable it to start up and start importing photos as soon as a camera is connected. It probably has a setting like that.

Vice versa should you ENable iPhoto, also in IT'S Preferences, to start up and start importing photos as soon as a camera is connected.
I wouldn't get Aperture for now. Why pay when you've got a fully functional iPhoto anyway?

iPhoto can indeed show you EXIF information under Photo –> Photo Info.
