How to shoot at a football game at night

I have a Sony A700 It is very new and do not know a lof of the features. I was taking pictures of my daughters powderpuff football game last night and I couldn't get any good pictures. Not enough light, how do you take night action pictures? What setting should I have it on.

thank you
Cindy Prokop

I repeat, mod:

Hi Cindy,

"I have a Sony A700 It is very new"

Congrats!

"and do not know a lot of the features."

Then I suggest you study the A700's manual well and practice what's in it. That is what manuals are for. If you then have any questions left not covered by your camera's user's guide I'd be happy to try and answer them. As would other BP members, I'm sure.

As far as your 'night action pictures' are concerned: you already said it: not enough light. You can try upping the ISO, but you will get much more noise as a trade-off.
Depending on your lens' max. aperture you may have to consider acquiring another lens with much faster (= more light sensitive) optics. The trade-off is expense, of course.

Have fun!

  Cindy,
Turn off DRO (use the "Fn" button and tha back of your camera)
Turn your ISO to 3200-6400.
Set your control dial to "S" and, using center-weighted metering (the little switch near the lower right of your viewfinder, it's the center position)turn the front dial to the highest shutter speed possible at your maximum apeture (smallest number)
Remember the numbers and switch to "M" mode and set your camera to those same numbers.
If you have noise issues:
Slow your shutter by one stop to overexpose a hair.
Get a noise reduction program such as NeatImage to remove noise in post-process.
The a700 rocks!
