August 2008 Contest - Preliminary Totals

Contest Totals for August 2008

Calling all Contesters!

Once again it is the time to get the totals of the entries in the Free Contest for August 2008.

As I am uncertain if I can get the totals at midnight Richmond, WA, time, I upload herewith the totals as of

Sunday 01:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. in Austria).

In the next 23 hours there will be a couple hundred uploads - so my totals will be somewhat off.

If I have a chance to get online at midnight, I'll post those totals as a correction.

Nature and Landscape 3118 13.9%
Animals 3194 14.2%
People 3785 16.9%
Elements of Design 1354 6.0%
Digital Darkroom 1631 7.3%
Travel and Place 1819 8.1%
Flowers 2360 10.5%
Macro 1830 8.2%
Catch-All 2743 12.2%
Monthly Theme 586 2.6% "Global Village"
Total 22432

Again the totals don't quite add up - well, I cannot check all columns at the same time!

Comparison:

October 2007: 40033 "THE" exceptional month and the first month I noted the totals.
November 2007: 35935
December 2007: 33187
January 2008: 36412
February 2008: 31563
March 2008: 33458
April 2008: 31568
May 2008: 31160
June 2008: 29506
July 2008: 23838
August 2008: 22432

This month the entries just about equalled July.

As mentioned there will be a few more entries.

One item of real interest: Check the submissions to the monthly theme! The "Global Village" obviously

presented evryone with a real toughie and there are few entries only. And, looking at all those entries you

can see that everybody kind of "grappled" with the subject. Let us see what the judges will come up with.

Enjoy BP as Christine and I do - it still is the best "photo site" around!

Alexander - I certainly appreciate your efforts here with all these numbers :)

It really helps me to figure out where my best chances could be for a EFP, finalist, or someday another win!

Thank you!

Thanks, Alexander. I know it must look as if no one is interested in these statistics, but I checked them out when you posted them and just had occasion to do so again so I thought I'd let you know that.

Thanks Ladies! I am sure many look at these as it is interesting to see where the BP's gang interest lie. I'll try and post them again this month, that'll be a whole year then. And the grandchildren and children are one year older... we - no way!

Another thank you from me, Alexander!

It's very interesting to see how the totals have gone down this summer--last August there were "over 38,000" entries, according to BP. Maybe it's only due to the gallery/contest changes, but maybe other factors, such as the US election/economy/weather are playing a part, too. Anyway, it's fun to speculate. :)

  Colleen,

Thanks for the cudos! You started that earlier! I am just getting ready for the September totals (I set up the message with Wordpad and my Excel sheet and have only to enter the totals and off they go) and I am including your totals for April to September '07, which you told me to use.

By the way, are you driving that '49 Nash in your gallery? In those days, Nash were the only US cars where you could fold the backrest of the front bench down, and the saying was "A guy with a Nash needs a lash"... I would not know why we used to say this...

That's a funny saying, Alexander--maybe if they weren't lashed down, they'd fall out? :) lol That Nash isn't mine; in fact, I'd never even seen one of them before. The guy who owns it looked like quite a character. I guess you could say cars sometimes resemble their owners! ;)

It's interesting to compare the contest totals for each category. For example, there were 67 finalists in N/L out of 3194 entries..success rate of 2.09%. Digital Darkroom had a higher number of finalists, 79, with fewer entries, 1670. The success rate for DD was 4.84%, or about 2 1/2 times greater than Landscapes. So, it paid to have DD entries for August. Next month, the pendulum could swing to Elements, or People, etc.
