Macro Lens Nikon I am fairly new to digital SLR photography. I have a D50 and been shooting for a little over a year. I would like to do some more close up macro work. I would like to pick up a macro lens for my Nikon D50. Any recommendations?

Depends on your budget. At the upper end the Nikkor 105mm VR micro (thats what Nikon calls them) is tough to beat. Very sharp and also doubles as a nice portrait lens. If that is out of your price range, check out the Tokina 100 mm Pro. You lose the VR which doesn't make a lot of difference in macro work since you should be on a tripod anyway. The lens is also sharp and built like a tank for about half the cost of the Nikkor. I've seen good reviews on sigma macros as well but have never used them. Bill

I have the Nikkor 105mm micro and LOVE it. I don't do much macro work, but it is my favorite portrait lens. :-) Don't cheap out - if you can afford the Nikkor 105mm (even if it's a stretch) go for that one - you won't be sorry!

The Nikkor 105mm Auto-focus-S with VR2 sounds like a great choice if your main subjects are flowers and butterflies, but if you are wanting to shoot smaller bugs a 60mm might be the way to go. Also, a tamron macro lens is cheaper, if price is an issue and I have heard good reviews about it. Hope this helps!

Kelly, I use the Nikkor 60mm for macro work and love it. All the flower images in my gallery were taken with this lens. I've used it for some portraits as well.

Love my Nikkor 105mm VR. I don't do much portrait work, but I've used it 4-5 times in that venue. I waited 4 years to get a macro/micro lens and I think it was really worth the wait. It is a GREAT lens.
